‘Julien Cahn was an interesting character, using his wealth to indulge his passion for cricket. He was part of a long line of private sponsors stretching from the Duke of Richmond in the 18th century to Kerry Packer in the 20th who had in common a role as benefactors to contemporary players of talent. Their motives, of course, were as different as the source of their wealth. Cahn’s were entirely altruistic as this engaging story of his life makes clear.’

Sir Julien is best known for his outstanding cricket team - the Sir Julien Cahn XI. During the 1930’s he built up what was probably the best team in the world. ‘The Eccentric Entrepreneur’ describes the antics of his world-class players, the relationship the cricketers had with their patron and their extraordinarily lavish overseas tours that took them to every corner of the globe.
As President, at different times, of both Nottingham County Cricket Club and Leicestershire County Cricket Club, he was extremely influential in the world of cricket, not only because of his great philanthropy to the clubs but also due to his controversial involvement in the Bodyline scandal.
But perhaps most bizarre of all, is how a man with absolutely no talent for the game, a man with an innate fear of the ball, ended up playing with all of the outstanding cricketers of the day.
