Stanford Hall, Loughborough

The Cahn’s family home, Stanford Hall near Loughborough, was described as “a bizarre eclectic mix of styles, revolving around Cahn’s eccentricity.” In 1927 Cahn employed White Allom, interior decorators for the Royals, to redevelop the Hall. No expense was spared. From its twenty-seven bathrooms to its state of the art sporting facilities, Stanford Hall became the most lavish of country houses brimming with extraordinary artifacts.

Sixty staff lived and worked at Stanford Hall. ‘The Eccentric Entrepreneur’ draws upon the reminiscences of of elderly former staff as well as anecdotes passed down through local families. It portrays a world almost unimaginable today - a community of young people with simple expectations and an utter lack of envy of the opulent lifestyle lived by their employers.

After Sir Julien’s death in 1944, Stanford Hall became the College for the Cooperative Society. In 2000 it was sold to a developer, who last year sold it to Chek Whyte Industries. Chek Whyte is redeveloping the hall to recapture some of its former glory as a luxury hotel, retirement village and offices.
